Diagnosed: Oliver Kei, seven, was diagnosed with xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) when he was 18 months old

Rare: The disorder, which is estimated to affect one in a million people in the US, means his skin cannot repair damage caused by exposure to the sun's rays

More likely: The disease, which makes him allergic to the sun means he is 1,000 times more likely to develop skin cancers than the average person

Extreme measures: His family must take drastic measures to protect him, which means Oliver has to wear UV-shielding materials

Hiding from the sun: Oliver must wear a thick plastic visor and gloves to reduce his exposure to the sun in his hometown of Quartz, California

Signs: If Oliver's skin is exposed to the sun, his skin darkens and he develops excessive freckling which is a sign of UV damage that can develop into skin cancer

Keeping him safe: His mom sews extra UV-safe fabric into his clothes and every few hours covers Oliver with both powerful cream-based and powder sunscreen

Exhausting: His mom, Noelle Kei, said that the routine can sometimes be tiresome and exhausting

Nice and dark: The first-grader said that he loves when it's 'nice and dark' because he can finally take off my gear

Staying up late: On 'Oliver-time' his family stays up really late and sleep-in so they can go outside and play in the backyard at night without his gear

Lighting the field: Sometimes the Kei family bring LED lanterns so they can play soccer and light up the field

Inspiration: Oliver's mom said that he inspires her because of how well he handles his XP
